The Minimalist Syntax of Imperfective Aspects in Mandarin Chinese

Mandarin Chinese is an aspect-prominent language, yet its imperfective aspects has not been studied systematically and intensively in the framework of the Minimalist Program(Chomsky 2000,2001,2004,2005,2007,2008,2013).Mandarin Chinese exhibits four imperfective aspects: the progressive aspect marked by zai/zheng/zhengzai,the durative aspect marked by-zhe,the inceptive aspect marked by-qilai and the continuative aspect marked by-xiaqu.Each imperfective aspect has its distinct syntactic properties and aspectual focus so as to behave differently in respect to their interactions with situation type. This research aims to explore their aspectual influence on temporal relations, their aspectual microvariation regarding syntactic behaviors, the aspectual interaction between the progressive aspect and other three aspects.
