    ISO 14531-1:2002 specifies the physical properties and mechanical-performance requirements for crosslinked polyethylene (PE-X) pipes intended for use in the supply of gaseous fuels. In addition, it lays down dimensional requirements and specifies some general material properties (including chemical resistance) together with a classification scheme for PE-X produced in the form of pipe. ISO 14531-1:2002, when used in conjunction with the other parts of ISO 14531, is applicable as the basis for the design, manufacture and installation of PE-X piping systems (PE-X pipes, PE-X fusion fittings and mechanical fittings) for the supply of category D and category E hydrocarbon-based fuels.

    ISO 17281 provides guidelines for determining the fracture toughness of plastics in the crack-opening mode (Mode I) by a linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEMF) approach, at load-point displacement rates of up to 1 m/s. It supplements ISO 13586 so as to extend its applicability to loading rates somewhat higher than is the case in the scope of the latter International Standard. The general principles, methods and rules given in ISO 13586 for fracture testing at low loading rates remain valid and should be followed except where expressly stated otherwise in this International Standard. The methods are suitable for use with the same range of materials as covered by ISO 13586. Although the dynamic effects occurring at high loading rates are largely dependent on the material tested as well as on the test equipment and test geometry used, the guidelines given here are valid in general, irrespective of test equipment, test geometry and material tested. The same restrictions as to linearity of the load-displacement diagram, specimen size and notch tip sharpness apply as for ISO 13586.

    This International Standard is used to determine the degree of disintegration of plastic materials in a pilot-scale aerobic composting test under defined conditions. The test method laid down in this standard can also be used to determine the influence of the test material on the composting process and the quality of the compost obtained. It cannot be used to determine the aerobic biodegradability of a test material. Other methods are available for this (see e.g. ISO 14851, 14852 or 14855).
